The "Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki" is a revered hymn dedicated to Lord Krishna, known as Shri Giradhar Krishna Murari. This profound invocation reflects deep devotion and reverence within the Hindu tradition.

Krishna, which translates to "dark" or "black," holds significant status as the eighth avatar of the Vedic Supreme God Vishnu. The name appears as both the 57th and 550th entries in the Vishnu Sahasranama from the Mahabharata, illustrating its importance in Hindu texts. Additionally, Krishna is included among the 24 Keshava Namas recited at the commencement of Vedic rituals.

According to the Bhagavata Purana, considered a sattva purana, Krishna is identified as Svayam Bhagavan, representing the complete incarnation of Vishnu. His depictions vary from an enchanting child playing a flute in the Bhagavata Purana to a youthful prince offering wisdom, as seen in the Bhagavad Gita. The narratives surrounding Krishna encompass a wide array of Hindu philosophical and theological contexts, presenting him as a divine child, a mischievous figure, a romantic icon, a heroic presence, and ultimately as the Supreme Being.

The principal texts detailing Krishna’s life include the Mahabharata, Harivamsa, Bhagavata Purana, and Vishnu Purana. The veneration of Krishna is rooted in history, with forms such as Vasudeva and Bala Krishna being worshipped since at least the 4th century BC. The concept of Krishna as svayam bhagavan or the Supreme Being emerged during the Middle Ages amidst the bhakti movement.

From the 10th century AD onwards, Krishna became an integral theme in performing arts and local devotional practices. Notable representations include Jagannatha in Odisha, Vithoba in Maharashtra, and Shrinathji in Rajasthan. In more recent history, since the 1960s, Krishna worship has gained prominence in Western contexts largely due to the influence of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
